Fatigue States are Multidimensional : Evidence from Studies of Simulated Driving
نویسندگان
چکیده
A recent NIOSH report on driver fatigue (Hitchcock & Matthews, 2005) discussed evidence that subjective fatigue states are multidimensional; comprised of several components. Vehicle driving may provoke different patterns of response on these components, depending on the source of fatigue, with differing implications for safety. However, existing fatigue inventories do not adequately survey these different components of fatigue state. For example, changes in the driver’s cognitions of personal competence are poorly sampled by existing measures. This paper will review key findings from two recent experimental studies of fatigue (Ns = 108, 180) that used a STISIM Model 400 simulator. Building on earlier work (e.g., Matthews & Desmond, 2002), simulator drives were designed so as to induce fatigue. The first aim of these studies was to differentiate qualitatively different patterns of subjective response corresponding to ‘active’ fatigue (derived from prolonged high workload) and ‘passive’ fatigue (derived from chronic understimulation). The second aim of these studies was to explore the psychometric properties of a new multidimensional fatigue inventory developed for NIOSH. Results will be presented that support the multidimensional fatigue model, and that demonstrate the different patterns of subjective response that may be labeled as “fatigue”. Methodological implications for investigating fatigue using simulator methods will be discussed. DSC 2007 North America – Iowa City – September 2007

Fatigue Assessment Scales: A comprehensive literature review
Background & Aims of the Study: Fatigue is one of the most important issues relating with safety and other aspects of human life. To understand fatigue and its relative factors and causes, there is a need to useful instruments, such as self-reported scales. The purpose of this study is to identify and present useful self-reported scales to measure fatigue. Materials & Methods: Data were extrac...

This study measured multiple physiological parameters of mental fatigue induced by the simulated driving task. The subjects’ mannerisms and driving performance reveal that the driving mental fatigue is induced after long-term simulated driving. The wavelet packet energy (WPE) of EEG were used to extract the features of brain activity in the normal and the mental fatigue states, then random fore...

Background and aims: Car seats have a significant impact on driver comfort and reduction of postural load on the low back of the driver. The purpose of this study was to compare three common types of car seat in Iran on the driver's fatigue and muscle discomfort. Methods: Ten participants completed 2 hours of simulated driving for each of the three type of car seat in different days ...

Introduction: Driver fatigue is one of the major causes of accidents in roads. It is suggested that driver fatigue and drowsiness accounted for more than 30% of road accidents. Therefore, it is important to use features for real-time detection of driver mental fatigue to minimize transportation fatalities. The purpose of this study was to explore the EEG alpha power variations in sleep dep...
